Originally from western New York, north of Buffalo, I began dancing at the age of seven and went on to continue my dance education at the University of Buffalo, receiving a B.A. in Dance in 2005. During my college career I had the opportunity to take class from several professional dance companies, was a member of the University’s Zodiaque Studio Dance Ensemble, the UB Dance Team and fun fact; cheered professionally for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills footballTeam.
After college I moved to Richmond, VA where I spent nine years teaching for Jessica Morgan School of Dance until its transition to Prestige Dance Studio in 2014. Those years of experience and mentorship were invaluable to me especially as I began my role as Artistic Director of Prestige.
In my six years as an Artistic Director, I have come to realize that my job is so much more than creating choreography. It’s about having an overall vision and philosophy for the Company, establishing a program with staff who are committed to the success of the program, and to nurture each dancer while also challenging their growth for the long term.
Simply put, it’s about knowing your dancers; their strengths, weaknesses, when they need a push,or when they need a hug. It’s being completely devoted to helping them succeed, as individuals and as a Company.
For me, my best work is in the classroom, that’s where the journey begins. The lessons, training, and magic that happens within those four walls is reflected in every performance that graces the stage. Teaching is my first love and my approach is realistic. Dance is indeed a marathon and not a sprint. I always say to my students, “You will only get out of something what you are willing to put in.” It’s actually quite simple, hard work pays off and passion is undeniable.
I am truly thankful for this nomination and beyond grateful for all of those who have supported me along the way. And my students…my kiddos…they are my inspiration and why I love what I do… they are just the best and I am nothing without each and every one of them!
We are so excited to introduce our featured dancers for the upcoming 2nd annual RVA Dance Awards. The 2020 RVA Dance Awards is a live show that celebrates creativity, leadership and innovation by recognizing excellence within our Central Virginia dance community. This event will be held December 2nd virtually.
