Meet Madison
Youth Dancer of the Year
Dancers of RVA
Hello! My name is Madison Kang, I am 16 years old, and I am a competition dancer at Prestige Dance Studio. I began dancing at the age of 6 at Jessica Morgan’s School of Dance, and have continued to dance there throughout its transition to Prestige Dance Studio. For the past seven years, I have been a member of Prestige Dance Company as well as the Prestige Dance Studio Royal Court competition team, an elite group of dancers hand selected for exceptional technique and artistry. I train in various styles including ballet/pointe, jazz, tap, lyrical/contemporary, and hip hop for approximately 8-10 hours a week from my teachers: Christy Burke, Stefanie Ogunwumiju, J.T. Beverly, Ashley Wyatt, Cara Cubbage, and Tristi McMaster Robinson. In addition, I am an assistant teacher for younger classes at the studio. I am also a junior at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, where I am an active member of the School Advisory Council and various honor societies and clubs.
I am incredibly honored to be nominated for Youth Dancer of the Year! Dance has been such a significant part of my life and I’m so excited to be able to share it with the RVA community. Throughout my years of dancing, learning, and competing, dance has both served as a growing experience that has taught me many valuable lessons, as well as a way for me to express my creativity, drive, and ambition. I have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to learn from other dancers and teachers, both at my home studio and across the country, and I am incredibly appreciative of the friends and connections I have made over the years. I hope to inspire young dancers to further their journey with dance and to continue to learn and grow, both as dancers
A fun fact about me is that I love to travel, and throughout my years of competition dance, I have enjoyed traveling to compete and take conventions in both Richmond and various cities along the East Coast. I have received awards, scholarships, and placements at competitions and conventions such as Radix, NUVO, Hollywood Vibe, Dance Makers Inc., Velocity, Revel, and Starquest, as well as scholarships applicable towards events such as The Dance Awards, The Main Event, DancerPalooza intensives, and numerous national competitions/conventions. I have also attended local intensives including KBM Talent’s summer intensive at Prestige Dance Studio and Stavna Ballet’s summer intensive. I have also participated/performed in many RVA dance events such as the Virginia Dance Festival, PDM Productions, and Ashley Wyatt and Neo Lynch’s collaborative project, “If No One Will Listen”.
We are so excited to introduce our featured dancers for the upcoming 2nd annual RVA Dance Awards. The 2020 RVA Dance Awards is a live show that celebrates creativity, leadership and innovation by recognizing excellence within our Central Virginia dance community. This event will be held December 2nd virtually.
