MEET KEVIN
Community Dancer of the Year & Best African Choreography Nominee
rva dance awards
It wasn’t until I was grown, working in a cubicle, that I realized that dance could be my vehicle or artistic expression. After about 15 years, it makes me grateful and honored to be nominated for Community Dancer of the Year and Best African Choreography for the first RVA Dance Awards. I just love bringing people together and representing the African roots that most of our favorite dances have. So these nominations make me feel that a may be headed in the right direction.
FUN FACT: Growing up, my first dance studio was my parents’ night club called Meljo’s in Freeman, Virginia where, after I would finish my chores, I would turn on the music (vinyl records – remember those?) and dance for hours by myself. I used to feel bad about starting formal dance training so late, but I know now that those formative years interpreting Janet and Whitney and dancing through the birth of Hip Hop were what developed the same choreographic voice I use today.
